Established in 1986, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading national volunteer-based organization in Canada dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer. The Foundation works collaboratively to fund, support and advocate for: relevant and innovative research; meaningful education and awareness programs; early diagnosis and effective treatment; and a positive quality of life for those living with breast cancer.
The CBCF raises funds through special events, corporate sponsorship and donations. CBCF directs 90 per cent of tax receipted donations towards combating breast cancer. The remaining 10 per cent is used to support fundraising ventures and for administrative costs. (Canada Customs & Revenue Agency only requires 80 per cent of donations to be spent for charitable purposes.)
Research:
In 1998, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation joined the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA) (formerly the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative) - a unique coalition of public, private and non-profit organizations funding breast cancer research in Canada. Through pooled resources, CBCRA allocates funding to a broad spectrum of breast cancer research, including prevention, early detection, treatment, quality of life, health services and fundamental laboratory investigations. CBCF Chapter award annual research grants, fellowships and special grants to local community and regional projects.
Education:
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation funds education and awareness programmes throughout the country. Public forums, such as Awareness Day in October, help promote breast health awareness to thousands of women each year. Community education grants allow CBCF chapters to fund local initiatives, reaching out to widespread audiences.
Diagnosis and Treament:
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation also funds projects to improve breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. These initiatives can help Canadian women better understand the benefits of early diagnosis through breast self- examination and mammography. Additionally, many CBCF research grants are dedicated to improving diagnostic tools and breast cancer treatment.
